How do English-language podcasts shape discussions about the Middle East? This event will explore this question by featuring a conversation between journalist, broadcaster, and media historian Gilad Halpern and Skidmore historian Murat C. Yildiz. Halpern is the host of the Tel Aviv Review, an English-language scholarly podcast, and a founding co-editor of the Tel Aviv Review of Books magazine, an English-language online quarterly. Halpern and Yildiz discuss his work at the Tel Aviv Review and the advantages and limitations of podcasts as a medium of sharing (and shaping) knowledge.
The Role of Journalism in Times of Crisis: Israel, the Middle East, and Beyond
Thursday, October 23 at 7:30 PM
Davis Auditorium in Palamountain Hall
Journalism in the twenty-first century is past its prime. Alongside the decline of the liberal order and the erosion of norms, it has suffered from financial woes and the overbearing bite of fake news. What role is left for journalism to play, domestically and internationally, especially against the backdrop of conflict? In this lecture, Gilad Halpern will draw on his experience as an Israel-based international journalist as well as media historian.
These presentations are part of the Jacob Perlow Series sponsored by the Office of Special Programs. Funding is provided by endowments established by Jacob Perlow and by Beatrice Troupin.
